For all of those people who know me out there your first reaction to this is going to be ‘What!?’ I am not a big sports fan at all. I am one of those people who will either happily fall asleep or just laugh at how board the commentators are when the golf is on.
To be frank golf is one of those games that I have no desire to play and watching bores me senseless. But when it plays as a video game some people out there just like myself will be surprised at how compelling it is as a video game. I had the opportunity of playing Tiger Woods o9 on the PS3, new years eve last year. I was given an abomination of a golfer to use (constructed by my girlfriends brother) but with that aside I actually secretly enjoyed the game.
With all that aside now I sit in my bedroom with my 360 Humming behind me. I am going to attempt a different kind of Demo review this time. So if you will bare with me I am going to attempt a play by play review of this demo.
Just booted up the demo with the classic E! A! Sports! Its in the game. Sash screen, progressing to the menu you have only few options for actual game play which are: Play 2 holes at Bethpage, Play 2 holes at Turnbarry, practise round and tournament challenge.
The other options just give you information about new features, but I want to focus on the game play. So me being me I’m gonna go practise round! The practise round again gives you the choices of 2 holes at Turnberry or Bethpage. Not having a foggy what the difference is I’m just gonna go with the name I like best. Turnberry it is!
It’s raining! great! (or not) Now if I know my games correctly this should have some effect on the way the ball roles on the ground. Wet surface probably means no roll distance at all. While the course was loading I was given a brief look at the control system. Not memorising hardly any of it I’m just gonna trial and error the buttons.
As its practise mode I get to place the ball wherever I want within reason, not knowing the first thing about golf really I’ll just leave it where it is. The Left stick swings the club so you can hit the ball. Holding down B shows you where the ball is going to land it seems. The trigger switches your clubs. No idea what Y is doing, seems to make a weird noise and the golfer is jerking a bit, best leave it. X changes how your gonna hit it, weather its a chip, pitch, flop etc. Full seems the best here, so without further ado I’m gonna whack the thing and see what happens, by pulling back on the left stick then shoving it forward.
That wasn’t hard, the ball moved and it seems to be in a goodish place. I can move the ball again….Don’t want to so I hold down B to see where its going. And i am gonna whack it again. Seems simple enough doesn’t look like I’m doing anything stupid. Its on the green, yayz!
Putting! I get a gauge at the side with a yellow marker in it which I can only assume is I’ve got to be in that yellow marker when I swing to get a chance of getting the ball in. Give it a shot……Bugger seems the wet ground strikes with its I’m not going to let the ball roll because I’m wet thing. Put numerous duo and its in yay!
To to save boredom I’m gonna do play a hole on Bethpage in normal mode. This time I cannot place the ball and there are crowds. The aiming system with B I used before on he PS3 and it is a nice element to this game, gives you great awareness of where the ball may land. Now as its sunny the ground should be on my side. I’m also getting coach tips as i play which is good. The game is telling me to spin the ball by holding a direction on the left stick while the ball is in the air and tapping A. Front spin is now my friend, the crowd seem to be cheering approvingly and the commentator is not commenting on the flowers so he must be some wat entertained by the shot.
Shot 2 and theres a tree in the way! Holding B again I move the marker, then I’ll swing not so hard to get it past the tree maybe with a touch of back spin (god I’m really getting into this :-/) Hey it worked.. awesome! Now to the green same method of holding B ad stuff again. OK it kinda went into cinematic mode as if i was going straight into he hole. But I missed… Fail!
So putting again, The grid i can see around the hole seems to be telling me where the incline is so ill just adjust my player using the D pad to compensate for that. I am rubbish at putting took me 3 attempts but I got it in.
Quick dab in tournament challenge mode and it seems you have to mimic Tigers shots. Could be fun to perfect your technique.
So as it stands the Demo is reasonable. I enjoyed it and may get my hands on an older copy of PGA tour because they are cheap. Defiantly a game to play between games or you just want to kill an hour or so. Not something I would play religiously.
