The Next Level In Gaming

So far, there’s been nothing but pleasing news about my most anticipated fighter *ever*, Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. Mixing some classic characters with very welcome newcomers, the roster we knew so far contained Capcom’s Ryu, Chris Redfield, Morrigan, Felicia and Dante, and also Marvel’s Wolverine, Iron Man, Hulk, Deadpool, and Captain America. They were off to a good start, and since then I’ve been anxious to hear more. There are plenty of characters we expect to see sooner or later, and some unexpected surprises – the latest news on the roster is a little of both. So without further ado, I’ll get on and tell you who the six latest additions are…

TEAM CAPCOM

Chun-Li

One of the more obvious characters, wherever Ryu goes the beautiful Chun-Li is sure to follow. Although not unexpected, Chun-Li is a welcome addition to the Capcom roster, being a staple part of the Street Fighter series and perhaps the most iconic female fighter in gaming. It’s always good to see her as a part of the roster – but I have a feeling she won’t be seeing as much use from me as in Street Fighter IV, what with all the outrageous and exciting new characters MvC3 has to offer. Still, it wouldn’t be the same without her.

Trish

When Dante was announced for Marvel vs Capcom 3, my dreams were answered. Although I’d love to see more Devil May Cry characters in the game, I never expected to actually see any more – but I’m happy to announce that the Devil May Cry 1 version of Trish will also be included in the game. I’m surprised Nero wasn’t the first choice for a second DMC character, what with him taking the lead role in the only DMC to hit the Xbox 360, but it’s good to see that Capcom are remembering the series’ roots. While Dante wields his entire weapon inventory from Devil May Cry 3 in the game, Trish should be wielding the massive Sparda sword that was given to her by Dante at the end of DMC1, whilst also having access to her signature lightning powers for some elemental attacks. It’ll be interesting to see what other tricks she’ll have up her (metaphorical) sleeves.

Amaterasu

Capcom haven’t actually announced this one, but leaked photos clearly shows Amaterasu in more than one image, so it’s either a certain thing, or someone’s really, really gone out of their way to fake it (which I doubt) - Now, although Ammy did cross my mind as a potential character, I honestly didn’t think she’d make an appearance in this game. I’m glad to hear I’m wrong, though, as Okami’s wolfy Sun Goddess joins the roster in her rightly deserved place amongst Capcom’s best. Utilizing elemental weapons, and I’d expect a fair amount of artsy paintbrush-activated attacks, including bombs, flower blossoms and of course, the Sun itself. There’s a lot of potential here.

TEAM MARVEL

Dr Doom

As with Chun-Li, Dr Doom was an obvious addition to the line-up – starring in Marvel vs Capcom 2 previously. He hasn’t changed much, unlike some of the characters who have undergone changes to different comic book alternatives to their classic costumes - and looks as though he’s going to be the usual flying, energy beam firing dictator we’ve all come to love over the years.

Super-Skrull

When it was announced that none of the Fantastic 4 would be included for “undisclosed reasons”, a fair amount of people already guessed that Super-Skrull would be the answer. A villain with the power to absorb all of the F4′s respective powers means we can use the combined force of the team all bundled into one neat package – somewhat like when Johnny absorbs all of their powers in the movie Rise of the Silver Surfer. Although it’s a shame we’ve got another villain rather than a heroic counterpart to face off against Dr Doom, I can see that Skrull is the best way to represent Mr Fantastic’s bunch of misfits in the latest addition to the Marvel vs Capcom series instead of giving us four less interesting individuals in a three-way tag team title.

Thor

Although I always have my speculations about how ‘leaked’ some images are, the recently revealed pictures of Amaterasu also showed another new face – that of Thor. With the upcoming Avengers movie comprising of Iron Man, Hulk, Captain America and Thor I had my suspicions he would be included to complete the set, but now it’s been confirmed. Thor dons his Reborn comic book attire, and comes equipped with his Hammer Mjolnir, super strength and elemental attacks.

A BOSS REVEALED?

Aside from the newly revealed characters, it’s also said that Dormammu, a villain most seen in Marvel’s Dr Strange comics will be present in the game – although to what extent has not been said. However, it is speculated that he could be a boss, which seems very likely given his “dark overlord” presence in the comics. Being a character with ties to inter-dimensional issues, I personally could imagine him being part of the storyline’s explanation as to how the two worlds of Marvel and Capcom will collide. If so, it makes me wonder if there will be a matching Capcom baddie to balance the game’s storyline to involve both sides.

Lastly, although the game involves a wide assortment of characters – not all of them could make the cut. It’s been confirmed that characters that will not be appearing include Daredevil, Emma Frost, Godhand‘s Gene, Ghost Rider, Punisher, Phoenix Wright, and characters from Rival Schools and Power Stone. Nothing overly disappointing there, except perhaps Ghost Rider – but I think there’s plenty of good news to come – with game producer Niitsuma claiming a third of the roster will be new to the Marvel vs Capcom series. Rumours of Viewtiful Joe making an appearance look likely to be true – but we’ll wait for some more solid proof before saying much else.

Updates coming as soon as we find out more!
