This week Hasbro Games has announced a collaboration with the popular retro video game franchise Tetris. As a result of this, this summer will see the launch of two new real-life Tetris inspired party games, JENGA TETRIS and BOP IT! TETRIS.
So what can we expect from this exciting fusion of much loved party games? Well BOP IT! TETRIS will combine the fast paced matching skills of BOP IT with the iconic shapes of the Tetris blocks. Players will have to match the familiar Tetris block shaped lights within the time limit, playing against increasingly fast challenges to reach the highest level. As for JENGA TETRIS? Take one Jenga tower, add Tetris blocks and, well you know the rest.
Here is what the teams behind this crossover project had to say:
“For almost 30 years, the TETRIS game has been played by hundreds of millions of players across nearly every mobile and video gaming platform,” said Henk Rogers, Managing Director of The Tetris Company. “We’re thrilled to be teaming up with Hasbro to expand the TETRIS brand and give our fans fun, challenging face-to-face formats to experience the ‘Tetris Effect’ in a unique way.”
“We’re looking forward to offering consumers innovative face-to-face gaming experiences that let them stack and match the TETRIS shapes like never before.” said Jonathan Berkowitz, Vice President of Marketing for Hasbro Gaming. “Now players can enjoy the challenging, social fun of two of their favorite Hasbro Gaming brands fused with the puzzle play of TETRIS.”
So what do we think of Tetris making its big leap into the real world?
Well, though have seen many board games successfully make the leap into digital form, it is rare that a video game makes it into the real world with the essence of the original game remaining intact. Despite this, and the possible lack of the much loved Tetris music (fingers crossed the BOP IT! version doesn’t let us down here) I think these games have potential. Though they will obviously be quite different from the Tetris game we all know and love, some of the puzzle and speed elements will remain making such a collaboration make much more sense. Add to this the fact that both BOP IT! and Jenga are such successful party games in their own right, and we are surely in for some fun here.
Does playing Nintendo Monopoly feel like playing a Super Mario game? Well not really, no. Will Tetris Jenga really feel like playing Tetris? Perhaps not, but personally I have hope that it just might be close enough.
Both games will Launch Globally in August 2013.
Until next time,
