Super powers and open-world games go together like zombies and flesh eating viruses. Back in 2009 the PlayStation 3 exclusive franchise InFAMOUS was launched, and since that time the franchise has come on leaps and bounds. Now with the next generation of consoles is right around the corner Sony has announced the latest game in the InFAMOUS franchise, InFAMOUS: Second Son
Story and Setting
InFAMOUS: Second Son is set in the US city of Seattle where the Department of Unified Protection (DUP) is stamping down on Conduits. Conduits are humans who have have been affected by the Ray Sphere, a device created by the First Sons which awakens a certain gene in the body and gives the victim superpowers. As the DUP are hunting Conduits left right and centre, they have overrun Seattle with security systems, high walk ways, scanners, searchlights and checkpoints to hunt down the so called ‘Biosterrorists’. Once captured these Bioterrorists are contained without trial. This game has a strong theme of Security Vs Freedom, which we predict also could play a big part in the gameplay.
Second Son is set seven years after InFAMOUS 2 and steps away from Cole McGrath’s story to put you in the shoes of a Delsin Rowe. Delsin is a street artist who has a love for anti-authoritarian street art and tagging buildings.
When stepping in to help victims of a DUP Conduit Transport Vehicle crash, Delsin unexpectedly starts absorbing powers from one of the crash victims. With his newly discovered powers he becomes something which to me resembles a mix between the street artist Banksy and Syler, the super power absorbing villan from Tv series Heroes.
Unlike Cole McGrath, Delsin is excited about his new found powers and can’t wait to use them. He is also a lot more confident and cocky, which could possibly go against him in a big fight.
As Delsin has the power to absorb and use other conduits abilities there will be a variety of powers to use in Second Son. The developers of the game Sucker Punch announced the first of these powers at E3,where it was confirmed that Delsin will be able to manipulate smoke at will. This opens the door to a variety of weapons and abilities which include throwing smoke projectiles, using smoke clouds to immobilizes enemies, and also turning into a cloud of smoke in order to teleport, travel through air vents situated around the city and even glide for a short time. Delsin will also wield a heavy duty bike chain as his melee weapon which he can infuse with whatever power he is using at the time. Much like previous InFAMOUS games buildings will be climbable and there will be no fall damage. Parkour enthusiasts should be right at home here.
As for enemies the DUP are highly trained military police and work much like a SWAT team. It looks like more often than not you will be fighting these guys in large numbers. It has also been confirmed that some of the DUP officers will wield supernatural powers in order to take on Conduits, so this potentially will give us a lot to contend with.
Of course there will be plenty of things to do around the city outside of the main story missions. One of the side missions that has been confirmed involves taking down DUP forward-operating bases. These can be taken down either by running in all powers blazing or by taking the more stealthy approach.
In keeping with the InFAMOUS Franchise, Second Son will have its own diverse moral choice system. Even though not much information has been released in regards to how in depth this system will be, the games Director Nate Fox has been said the following: “Choice and consequences are something we are dead set on making as profound as possible”
That’s all the infromation we have InFAMOUS: Second Son so far, you can check out the gameplay video below.
