Last week Microsoft and 343 Industries confirmed Halo 5: Guardians. This is the next installment in the Halo Reclaimer trilogy, which follows Master Chief as he discovers the secrets of the Prometheans, The Forunner alien race that were responsible for creating the Halo Rings.
Want to know what has been announced about Halo 5 so far? Well read on to find out what happened in the Reclaimer Trilogies previous installment, my predictions on Halo 5 and what has been officially announced.
What happened in Halo 4? The Abridged version. (Contains Spoilers)
Halo 4 Main Campaign
Four years after the events of Halo 3, Master Chief awakens from Cryo-sleep and crash-lands on the Forunner planet Requiem. After fighting off rogue Covenant forces and a new alien race called the Prometheans. The chief follows a distress call from the UNSC ship Infinity which has also crash landed on Requiem. Cortana quickly finds what she believes to be a set of radar jammers which may be blocking the UNSC Infinity’s radio signal, but after destroying them Master Chief quickly discovers that these ‘Radar Jammers’ are in fact a huge device used to imprison an ancient Forrunner Warrior called the Didact.
Halo 4 took us on a roller coaster ride fighting the Prometheans, the Covenant and the Didact which ended up in an epic fight between the Forrunner warrior and the UNSC Spartan. Unfortunately Cortana had to sacrifice herself to defeat the Didact and help the UNSC Infinity escape Requiem safely with Master Chief on board. Not all is well however as The Didact manages to get his ship into slip space and sets his sights on the Earth city of New Phoenix. We are left with chief aboard Infinity and the Didact invading New Phoenix.
Halo 4 Spartan – Ops
After the main campaign players had the option of playing the co-op Spartan ops campaign. This was released episodically and takes place 6 months after the events of the single player campaign and the invasion of New Phoenix.
The UNSC Infinity returns to Requiem, led by the commander of the new Spartan IV’s Sarah Palmer. The Spartan IV’s have been deployed to Requiem to clear out any rogue Covenant forces and any Promethean threat. One of the Spartan fire teams uncovers a Forrunner artifact which is subsequently bought onto the UNSC Infinity to be analyzed. The artifact then transports the chief engineer and all of Infinity’s data to the Covenant forces working with the Didact on Requiem.
The Spartan fire team then comes across a second artifact. This artifact holds all the memories of the victims of the New Pheonix invasion six months prior, confirming that the Didact had been turning humans into Prometheans. They then discover that Dr. Halsey, the chef scientist responsible for the Spartan program before the war is now in league with the rogue covenant and the Didact.
After the Covenant have all the information they need they send the planet Requiem into the sun along with the UNSC Infinity. The Infinity narrowly escapes and we are left with Dr Halsey swearing her allegiance to the covenant and the Didact.
What do we know about Halo 5?
As you can imagine there hasn’t been anything confirmed about Halo 5’s story line. What we do know however according to the Halo 5 trailers shown at last years E3 is that Master Chief is back and he is wearing a poncho. Yeah okay, it’s not much to go on but hopefully more news on Halo 5’s Story will be announced at E3 this year.
When the announcement of Halo 5 was made on the official Xbox news blog, 343’s General Manager Bonnie Ross stated:
“Halo 5: Guardians is a bigger effort than Halo 4. That applies to the content and scope of the game, as well as the technology in what’s now a brand new and more powerful engine. Certainly there are some core elements carried over from prior games, but we’ve invested a huge effort in retooling our tech to take full advantage of the Xbox One’s hardware and ecosystem to create worlds and experiences worthy of next-gen.”
In a nut shell we can expect lots of shininess from Halo 5. It was also interesting to hear that they are bringing some core Halo game play elements back. The FPS game play has always been quite strong in the Halo series in my opinion and everyone loves riding round in a banshee and shooting up some Covenant!
It’s also interesting to note that this is the first numbered Halo game to have a subtitle since Halo: Combat Evolved. Could there be other Halo 5 games coming out? Or are 343 just wanting to make the name sound less boring?
Halo 5 Predictions.
For the most part the internet has been speculating as to who the mysterious character is in the Halo 5 announcement poster and why they seem to be featuring more in the poster than Master Chief is.
My first guess was it may have been a new Promethean suit of armor for Master Chief, however this theory was squashed when Halo 5’s executive producer confirmed that the character featured is entirely new. That also squashed my second theory that it might have been a physical embodiment of Cortana or something of that ilk.
Who could this new character be? Maybe a Spartan who thought it was a great idea to team up with Dr. Halsey? Or a new recruit to the Spartan IV fire team featured in Spartan ops? We could even go completely off the rails and guess that maybe Dead Space’s Isaac Clarke decided to get a shiny new Spartan outfit and join in. I’m predicting that this maybe one of Dr. Halsay’s new creations. If you were the one of the top scientists who worked on the original Spartan program and you had just defected to the enemy side, wouldn’t you want to fight fire with fire? Hopefully more information will be given to us at E3 next month.
It is interesting to see that the Halo 5 promo poster does feature two characters. This may hint that 343 are going down the same route as Halo 2 and splitting the campaign between two characters. It would be cool to see this story line from a different perspective, it worked really well in Halo 2 so I wouldn’t be surprised if the franchises uses the same method again.
What are your predictions for Halo 5: Guardians? Do you agree with my predictions? Feel free to voice your opinion below. Hopefully more announcements will be made come E3.
Halo 5: Guardians has been confirmed for a November 2015 release exclusively for Xbox One.
