The Next Level In Gaming

‘Rant’

We live in a wonderful world. A world where technology is bringing people closer together than at any other time in our history. Gamers from the US can play against those in Japan and China, and even Welsh players can be heard. However, all is not well in this 21st century world. Apart from economic stagnation, the cold war in Korea warming up, Russia as a mafia state and the possibility of Sarah Palin being president, there is the trouble [...]

Back on the PS2 Max Payne was the only 3rd person shooter I played. Back then I was free to try out games I could afford and Max Payne 1 was one of the first games I got for the PS2. I was amazing, the very idea of bullet time in a game was amazing to me. The Matrix had come out around the same time there wasn’t a game that used the slow mo effect that the Matrix had, [...]

When it comes to FPS games there are only a few titles that stand out as the best of the best in my opinion. Halo (obviously), the original Unreal games, Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem and Timesplitters. I love my Sci-Fi shooters and with the recent rebirth of Duke Nukem and with Id’s upcoming RAGE, I’m starting to wonder something… Where the heck is the next instalment of Timesplitters?

When Halo: Reach launched, I was one of the dissenters who chose to make their reluctance to continue investing in the series clear. Obviously, Reach is supposedly a fantastic game and I’d probably enjoy my time with it if I chose to invest in it, but in a gaming climate overflowing with First Person Shooters my desire to play them has declined to the point where the only FPS games I’m even remotely looking forward to are Duke Nukem Forever [...]

Last night saw possibly one of the biggest launch events for a game/console/peripheral in new york. Times square was littered with dancing people for the launch event for Kinect. Originally labeled project Natal back at E3 in 2009. The idea behind Kinect is controller-less gaming, meaning you can play games just with your body. With the Tag line you are the controller it sounds like it should be a revolution for the 360.

OK, my post the other day was somewhat interested in the idea of a new DmC. The idea that Capcom, even alongside Ninja Theory, could continue upon the franchise and hopefully answer some of the many questions that were left open in DMC4. Why did Nero look so much like a Son of Sparda? What really happened to Vergil, and what was his connection with Nero? And would Dante ever hook up with Lady? (OK that last one wasn’t really [...]

Devil May Cry for me has to be one of the best game franchises out there. Devil May Cry 3 being the very title to get me into the hack and slash genre and indeed the best title of the series in my opinion, that particular game had one of the most bad ass protagonists I had ever seen, plus an amazing battle system and a really good story line that had Dante’s Devine Comedy over tones mixed with good [...]

When I play a game, I am always up for a bit of a challenge. I look at some FPS titles  and can’t help but whack the difficulty up to max and count the seconds it takes for me to get totally disemboweled by zombies or space aliens. Even though I do like the challenge I am never that great at it, Games are supposed to be fun at the end of the day, this is why I play them. [...]

If you cast your mind back to last year, and how much I was impressed by Milo, the annoying CGI child that Microsoft and Lion Head showed off when Natal was announced, you may remember me being pretty excited about that particular game/piece of software.

Nearly every RPG in the last ten years has had a touted moral choice system in game. That is not to say that it didn’t exist before, but there certainly seemed to be less emphasis on it when compared to the more recent releases. It has become accepted as standard that almost every game should give you the choice to be good or evil in some way shape or form. Even action games like Infamous or FPS’s like Bioshock feel [...]
