‘Gaming Musings’

A person or a team of a company’s most highly skilled creative team are issued the task of creating a new IP (Intellectual Property) and cannot sleep until the light bulb shines. They resort to antics such as: recycling past heroes and taking their key skills and looks, they maybe even brainstorm ludicrous plots and obscene protagonists. I mean come on, a plumber that eats mushrooms? How is that going to be a succe………. Well I’m sure you get my [...]

The Nintendo Wii has gone from strength to strength ever since its release back in November 2006. It has captivated casual gamers and some of the hardcore elite in many different ways, it has even brought families together and has appealed to all ages, even the over 50′s. With its more interactive approach to gaming as a whole it has sparked off all sorts of ideas in the games industry such as Playstation move and Microsoft’s Kinect. It has literally [...]

When it comes to FPS games there are only a few titles that stand out as the best of the best in my opinion. Halo (obviously), the original Unreal games, Doom, Quake, Duke Nukem and Timesplitters. I love my Sci-Fi shooters and with the recent rebirth of Duke Nukem and with Id’s upcoming RAGE, I’m starting to wonder something… Where the heck is the next instalment of Timesplitters?

Throughout gaming history there have been two staple weapons of choice, the gun and the sword. Both have been wielded by heroes and villains a like, and of course there have been all different varieties of these weapons from rocket launchers to demon possessed blades. So if you were a hero or indeed a villain, what staple weapon would you choose? The gun or the sword?

I have always been an avid fan of Tetris; a very simple game that requires you to use shapes known as tetrominoes that are sent thrown down the screen one at a time, tasking the player to manipulate said shapes to construct horizontal lines with no gaps. These lines will disappear once they are constructed, meaning the game continues until the shapes speed down so fast you can’t control them anymore and they reach the top. This game was made [...]

The debate that has been plaguing FPS fans for what seems like centuries are First Person Shooters better on the PC or on a Console? The hardcore FPS fans out there sware by the PC, saying that using the mouse is faster and more accurate. Where console gamers like the fact that FPS games simulate shooters more by actually using your trigger finger and shooting down PC fans when they point out you can change the controller sensitivity.

Contributed by Andrew Highton Since February 1 2007, gamers have had the chance to extract more satisfaction from a particular game by merely completing specific criteria for an in-game challenge. Games have been given a whole new depth and in many ways have become more appealing to players just by having these. That date was when Microsoft made it mandatory for developers to implement achievements into all games from then on requiring an allotted amount of achievements that would total [...]

Contributed by Andrew Highton Halo? Call of Duty? Killzone? Battlefield? What do all of the above have in common? Well, they’re all amazing online experiences which provide much excitement, along with enough thrills and spills designed to fill any gamer with enough adrenaline to punch a hole through a wall… unsuccessfully. Nevertheless, these games have servers cluttered up with many gamers who’re either capturing a flag, killing opposing members of the other team or blowing up some munitions in a [...]

Preparing for the Bikini Summer The key topic of conversation in the office this week has been fitness. I don’t know whether it’s the puzzling tendency for otherwise non-religious girls to give up chocolate for lent, or the recent spell of hot weather reminding us of the imminent approach of beach season but becoming tanned, buff and bikini ready is now officially the order of the day. There is no denying that I am unashamedly impressionable and I have never [...]

Back in my uni days I was a sucker for trading in games. This was partly so I can get the latest games a little bit cheaper and I really didn’t think that any of my titles were worth hanging on to except a select few. My collection kept changing and changing. It was a fantastic way to save money and get some good titles in the process. Ever since things like Xbox LIVE and Steam on PC started to [...]
