Fallout New Vegas Preveiw

Fallout New Vegas Preview

Ah my beloved Fallout, finally back where it belong; back East in Nevada and Mojave Desert, but not, of course in its original isometric style. But that’s the old school fan in me talking. So what do we have to look forward in this latest standalone incarnation in this post-apocalyptic series?

In this incarnation you don’t start playing as a Vault Dweller, but are instead identified as ‘The Courier’ carrying important information to the New California Republic, a faction that old fans will recognise from Fallout 2 who has now come to dominate the whole of California and is spreading beyond.

E3 2010: Nintendo’s E3 Conference

With the disappointment of Microsoft’s conference weighing heavy on many, Nintendo’s conference wouldn’t really have to exert much effort to give a better showing. What Nintendo did give was a conference with a massive amount for the hardcore, and a lot of promise for their new 3DS.

The conference kicked off by looking at the new Zelda for the Wii, now subtitled ‘Skyward Sword’. Looking like a mix between the graphical style of Wind Waker and Twilight Princess, it gives an artistic style that looks incredible. Hoping that the Wiimotion Plus addon will help to make all of the controls and complicated layouts an element of the past, Shigeru Miyamoto came onstage to demonstrate after a video that helped inject some humour into the proceedings. However, his demonstration would prove to be worrying as ‘Wireless Interference’ would prove to make controlling and showing off the game difficult, and left those onstage to apologise profusely and assure the crowd that “This didn’t happen in the rehearsal” and “When you play the game for yourself, you’ll see it works”. The WiiMotion Plus does seem as if it’ll give a better sense of control, despite the worryingly demo, with weapons being more refined to accomodate motion controls, such as the ability to aim where you throw, drop and roll bombs, new weapons such as the Beetle launcher which allows you to guide a Beetle around which can pick up additional items for you and the Whip, as well as old items like the catapult. It was then announced that Skyward Sword would be delayed until 2011 as the development was taking longer than expected.

Despite some demo issues, I fell in love with this game like it was love at first sight.

Final Fantasy XIII: 16th hour opinion

Being an avid Final Fantasy fan, I picked up Final Fantasy XIII on release day. I of course intend to review the title – but it’s going to be a fair while until I’ve seen everything. Therefore – I bring to you my Final Fantasy XIII review – so far! In case you’re wondering – I’m up to Chapter 7, Part 4, with just over 16 hours clocked up. Be warned – it’s not all good news.

The title tells the story of a world that thrives inside a sphere-shaped world called Cocoon. Something like gods, deities called the Sanctum fal’Cie regulate the world’s elements – it’s water, it’s light, and it’s food, providing a live for the people who live within. However, there is a world outside of Cocoon – known as Pulse. Little is known about this world – only haunted memories and tales of attackers from this outside land, believed to be some sort of hellish landscape. The world of Pulse also has it’s own fal’Cie – and if people come into contact with them, they are branded l’Cie, doomed to complete a mission given to them by the Pulse fal’Cie – and branding them enemies of Cocoon. As people fear the l’Cie, anyone believed to be tainted by a Pulse fal’Cie is hunted down and exiled on a one-way train to Pulse. The story is a little confusing to understand to begin with, with “fal’Cie” and “l’Cie” and “Cie’th” terms flying around, but background information can be looked up and explained more in detail via the in-game “Data-log” menu which updates as the story progresses.

The story focuses on six characters, most namely Lightning – a former solider and Snow, leader of a group of young rebels called NORA. As with all Final Fantasy titles, the characters all have their own backgrounds, motivations and beliefs which all become clear as the story progresses. Rather than being in the shoes of Lightning all the time, however, FFXIII has so far had me switching between the various characters as they all make their own journeys, sometimes meeting up or going their own ways. This means for a while you are constantly changing which character you play as and seeing things from their perspective.

The battle system is somewhere between the old ATB system of Final Fantasy, but more in the vein of Final Fantasy XII with real-time action which is always moving, and the fact that you only control one character in battle. The character you control has an “ATB” guage which constantly fills, but unlike older FF titles, it’s split into sections. Different abilities cost a certain amount of these sections, and depending on how many sections are filled you may chain up different attacks. For instance, if you have 3 sections filled, you can chain one “Attack” action (section cost of 1), and one “Blitz” action (section cost of 2). The character will then execute the attacks in a combo, and the battle will continue with the ATB filling once more.

Once you reach a certain point of the game, you may then switch character classes to access different attacks and roles in battle – for instance, the “Commander” class focuses on damage dealing, the “Ravager” class assists in raising attack chains to deal higher damage, the “Medic” class focuses on healing and the “Sentinel” class revolves around taking damage in place of others. You are then able to change formations during battle, which allows you to choose sets of different classes for the team – such as “War and Peace” which makes one character a Commander, and one a Medic, or “Doublecasting” which makes both members Ravagers. You need to switch these on the fly to make the best of the situation and optimise your performance.

Levelling up occurs on a Sphere-Grid style system, where each character has a seperate grid for each of their classes, and you can expend CP (Crystal Points) to move around the grids activating nodes which grant new abilities and stat upgrades. Abilities are specific to each class – i.e. Commander abilities like Blitz can only be used when the character is using the Commander class. Stat upgrades, such as HP+50 and Accessory Slot+1 boost the character permanently.

I won’t spoil it, but so far I really like the plot – the characters are all fairly interesting, with their own feelings and motivations which keep me wanting to know more and see where their paths will lead. The graphics are brilliant, and really brings the world to life with fantastic looking areas and cast.

However, I so far have found the game to be rather disappointing. While the story and characters keep me going, I can’t help feeling that behind the game’s graphics lays a fairly linear and bland game. The general flow of the game goes from cutscene to linear path with enemies, the odd boss and that’s about it. While older FF’s of course had a lot of battles, the fact that you only control one character at any given time means that the battles can feel very repetitive at times since you only control one role within the fight. The battles also feel fairly drawn out – as you generally only alternate between one or two different attacks it can feel as though you are just repeatedly entering the same commands to wear the enemies down – who seem to have a bit more health than normal FF enemies, perhaps since you fight less of them overall, with enemies being visible on the field as you progress. Although you do unlock new attacks, they seem very far apart and few in number – meaning that you simply add another attack to your chain which you see over and over again.

In this way, I find that the battle system (aided slightly by the Paradigm system which allows minimal control over the party’s actions) is alright, but not the best seen in a Final Fantasy title so far. This wouldn’t necessarily be a problem, only the linearity of the game means that aside from the battles theres nothing else to do – no side-quests, towns or other tasks to do along the way. Although I do believe some side quests open up later in the game, I’m expecting the majority of them will simply be fights against bigger and harder bosses. Where most FF games broke up the fights with exploring cities and searching for items, FFXIII pushes endless battles upon you and gives you access to all shopping and upgrading through a simple menu accessible via the save point. On a side note - 16 hours in and I still can’t select my own party members – although I doubt it’s far off. It’s not a huge flaw in comparison to other things, but it would be nice to at least choose between the characters I have in my party at a given time.

Although I’ll certainly be playing more of the game to see what happens to the characters, I can’t help feeling as though I’m more of a spectator of the story rather than a participant – the constant character switching doing nothing to help this fact. To be truthful, most of the enjoyment of the game has come from the story, which would have been equally enjoyable if they had left the battles (i.e. the gameplay) out of it entirely. I’ll hope that the game will improve as it goes on – but I’m not holding my breath. Let’s just hope the storyline doesn’t disappoint. A real shame – the characters and plot really gave the game a lot more potential than it’s shown so far. As a big FF fan, I really don’t think the game has lived up to what it’s predecessors gave us in terms of content, sacrificing gameplay for graphical power and dialogue.

Expect a full-review once I complete the game, but I’m not expecting my opinion to change dramatically between now and then - let’s hope I’m wrong.

Project Needlemouse Now Revealed

Back last September, you may remember my partner in crime Leon unveiling a new Sega project in the works, dubbed project needle mouse this exciting new project had us sonic fans hoping that sonic will be returning to his true and original 2D form.

Well gamers and Sega fans of the world. I suggest you sit down because the sequel to Sonic 3 has been announced. Project Needle Mouse is non other than, SONIC 4!

The full name Sonic 4: Episode 1 will be using the same visuals as we are used to from the likes of Street Fighter IV. Meaning there will be 3D models used on a 2D playing field. So it is safe to say that out Blue spiky friend is back to his 2D form, just.

From the teaser trailer that Gamespot had showed just this morning, some of the original 2D features will be making a come back, such as the classic loop the loops from sonic 2 and the double screen loops from sonic 3.

Image From Gamespot.com

So what are we expecting from Sonic 4’s story? Well when Gamespot asked Ken Balough, the sonic 4 brand manager he said, “While the game is a brand-new adventure, it will definitely pick up after Sonic & Knuckles. However, what you are looking at is the beginning of a new story arc,” a direct follow on sixteen years after the 1994 release of Sonic And Knuckles. Well it took them long enough.

Keen then went on to say, “We’re going to deliver a Genesis-era Sonic game as if it were created today that goes to the core of what classic Sonic fans desire. This means [the fan] gets to judge us on our work each step of the way, and we plan on delivering that goal in a big way.” This all sounds pretty exciting, but wait, there is more.

It seems as though the sonic team are taking the “going back to the roots of sonic” to heart. As you can tell from the title this will be an episodic outing for Sonic. It has been stressed that Sonic 3 and Knuckes were in effect two parts of the same game. So with Sonic 4 Sega are planning to use that feature more, meaning the Lock On technology we had with Sonic and Knuckles may come back in a some what different way.

As for controlling Sonic, the classic 2D moves we have known and loved have come back, such as the spin dash and the super speed sneakers power up.  But later Sonic titles have utalisd a homing attack, and it has been announced that this homing attack will feature in Sonic 4.

This is all sounding to be a pretty sweet game. As it is an episodic title I will imagine that this game will be available for download, as opposed to a disc release. It will be available across all platforms (Wii, PlayStation 3 and X Box 360) and, for me at least, this is a welcome come back for the retro Sonic most gamers of my generation have grown up with.

TMNT: Turtles in time Re shelled trial Overview!

“…Leonardo leads! Donatello does machine!! Raphael is cool but rude! And  Michelangelo is a PARTY DUDE!!!”

*ahem*

Yes OK I admit it back in the early 90’s I couldn’t stop watching the cartoon. I hated Shredder just as much as the next 5 year old kid and I must admit these “turtles in a half shell.” Got me into pizza.

But enough of the trip down memory lane. I picked up the trial version of TMNT: Turtles in time re shelled last night. Not having played the original turtles in time I was kind of optimistic on what I was about to play.

First off the TMNT classic cheese is still alive and well. One of shredders (what I assume to be) Gigantic creations has stolen the statue of liberty of all things and the turtles have to stop his evil plan!!

Why the statue of liberty I dot know, most villains rob national banks but looking at the guy I dread to ask.

TMNT1

Anyway back to the game. In the trial version you have both single player and multiplayer available. The single player puts you through one level and one boss (if you can call it that). You can choose from all four turtles which have varying stats. But personally I didn’t see much difference, except for Donatello’s reach seeing as he has his uber long cane.

That aside the game play is……clunky to say the least. Me being me I am used to fast paced combos from the likes of Devil May Cry and Ninja Gaiden. This game however seems slow and has about as many combos as I have brain cells…Not many!

The graphics on the other hand look really good! Still maintaining the cartoony style and giving the game a nice 3D over hall. I would defiantly hang this game up on my wall more than anything.

The boss battle I mentioned earlier, well it wasn’t a boss as more of an annoyance. It flew and didn’t take long to kill at all.

As for the multiplayer it is very much the same deal but with up to four people. Hordes of foot soldiers who like to watch you more than anything. As you can see I am not overly impressed by this game.

TMNT2

All in all TMNT Turtles in time re shelled is a remake of a game that should of been buried. Even though it looks very shiny the game play doesn’t hit the mark. But if you really enjoyed the original then this is the game for you.

TMNT: Turtles in time Re shelled is available now from Xbox LIVE arcade for 800 MSP!

Garv!

EDIT: Hmm didn’t notice that Michelangelo has exactly he same pose in both screen shots. Thats how varied it is :p

Did you miss?: Reviews for older titles

Its true, games consoles have gotten more powerful over time, allowing developers to make more visually impressive, larger games, which allow them to create something that it ultimately more impressive. But the creativity has always been there – simply contained within the rules and restrictions of the console games were built for. Although generally less powerful than games of this generation, older games can still be masterpieces, and it would be a shame to ignore them thus.

Therefore I have decided to create my own series of articles on PlusXP – simply titled “Did you miss?“. I will be cover ing a good selection of old games, and will review them spoiler-free so fear not if you’ve never played the game before! Keep an eye out, and you may just discover something you may have otherwise  missed altogether!
