Here come some new challengers!

So far, there’s been nothing but pleasing news about my most anticipated fighter *ever*, Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds. Mixing some classic characters with very welcome newcomers, the roster we knew so far contained Capcom’s Ryu, Chris Redfield, Morrigan, Felicia and Dante, and also Marvel’s Wolverine, Iron Man, Hulk, Deadpool, and Captain America. They were off to a good start, and since then I’ve been anxious to hear more. There are plenty of characters we expect to see sooner or later, and some unexpected surprises – the latest news on the roster is a little of both. So without further ado, I’ll get on and tell you who the six latest additions are…

TEAM CAPCOM

Chun-Li

One of the more obvious characters, wherever Ryu goes the beautiful Chun-Li is sure to follow. Although not unexpected, Chun-Li is a welcome addition to the Capcom roster, being a staple part of the Street Fighter series and perhaps the most iconic female fighter in gaming. It’s always good to see her as a part of the roster – but I have a feeling she won’t be seeing as much use from me as in Street Fighter IV, what with all the outrageous and exciting new characters MvC3 has to offer. Still, it wouldn’t be the same without her.

Street Fighter X Tekken Announced.

You may remember sometime last week a post done by me highlighting the rumour about Capcom Vs Namco and visa versa. Well I am pleased to announce at Comic Con this weekend the rumour came true…well almost.

Original Rumour: Capcom Vs Namco, a game putting various characters from the Capcom and Namco games and pitting them against each other. Much like Marvel Vs Capcom.  There will be two games being made one by Capcom with the Street Fighter IV engine and one by Namco with the Tekken 6 engine.

Cheap Bosses: Revenge Of The Game Developer?

When I play a game, I am always up for a bit of a challenge. I look at some FPS titles  and can’t help but whack the difficulty up to max and count the seconds it takes for me to get totally disemboweled by zombies or space aliens. Even though I do like the challenge I am never that great at it, Games are supposed to be fun at the end of the day, this is why I play them.

Ever since I have been sinking my teeth into curtain game genres such as Hack and Slash games and fighting games, I have come to realize that some titles seem to get to a point where the game stops being difficult and just becomes frustrating. This is typical of some hack and slash titles and some fighting games as well. I am of corse talking about cheap boss’s.

An example of a non-cheap boss and he is called DR ROBOTNIK not Egg man!

Leon’s MvC3 Roster Prediction – Team Capcom

Now, the recent news concerning the announcement of Marvel vs Capcom 3 has got me buzzing, with the sudden news of a trailer, artwork, some confirmed characters and a lot of silhouettes giving us a few hints as to who else we can expect to see in next year’s release. Of course, we could wait to find out who’s coming - but we could be waiting a while. So I bring to you – my predictions for the roster of Marvel vs Capcom 3!

Now, the creators have said that they are currently aiming for around 15 characters per side, although it’s likely the end result will be more - hopefully a lot more since they’ve got a lot of good material to work with! I’ve managed to narrow my predictions down to 17 per side. And today, I announce the predictions for the Capcom side of the rivalry…

Name: Ryu
From: Street Fighter
Appeared in previous installment?: Yes
Likelihood of appearing: Confirmed character

A Capcom fighter just wouldn’t be right without Ryu, the lead character of Street Fighter that gives most players at least one fighter they can use without worrying that they don’t know any of the moves. Bringing in his classic Hadokens, Shoryukens and unpronouncable spin kicks, he’ll surely be a solid character, with his Shinkuu Hadoken devastating all that stand in his way.

  Name: Morrigan
From: Darkstalkers
Appeared in previous installment?: Yes
Likelihood of appearing: Confirmed character

The seductive Morrigan hails from Capcom’s more monsterlike fighter, Darkstalkers. A beautiful succubus, she uses her wings for aerial manoevers and can use dark powers such as summoning bats to attack. In Marvel vs Capcom 2 her hyper moves included purple lasers and the ability to attack the opponent alongside a doppelganger.

  Name: Chris Redfield
From: Resident Evil
Appeared in previous installment?: No
Likelihood of appearing: Confirmed character

Chris Redfield is the original lead male in the Resident Evil series, also being the lead character of Resident Evil 5. We haven’t seen him before but clips suggest he’ll be employing guns among his moves. We don’t know a lot else – but I’m sure his melee attacks and the Rocket Launcher will be in there somewhere. Perhaps we’ll see Sheva as a cameo in one of his specials?

  Name: Dante
From: Devil May Cry
Appeared in previous installment?: No
Likelihood of appearing: Very likely

When Marvel vs Capcom 2 was first released a decade ago, the original Devil May Cry hadn’t even hit the shelves yet and Dante wasn’t a known character in the gaming world. As time passed on and I grew to love the series – specifically DMC3 – I’d always wished I could see Dante appear in the series, but it seemed it could never be so. However, now starring in four games, he’s now a very likely candidate for the newly unveiled installment of the fighter – with plenty of potential for sword/gun/demonic attacks of pure coolness. Silhouettes in the new artwork look almost undeniably like him, and there should be no lack of inspiration for fighting moves where this guy’s concerned.

  Name: Felicia
From: Darkstalkers
Appeared in previous installment?: Yes
Likelihood of appearing: Almost certain

Silhouettes in the new art could surely belong to none other than Felicia, Darkstalkers’ resident cat-girl. Using a very rapid and acrobatic style, we should see her tumbling all over the place, leaping around and scratching her opponents to shreds. In MvC2, her hyper attacks included barrage attacks and summoning a swarm of other cat-girls to beat up her opponent.

  Name: Chun Li
From: Street Fighter
Appeared in previous installment?: Yes
Likelihood of appearing: Almost certain

Chun Li is Street Fighter’s most recognisable female, using an array of rapid kick attacks and energy blasts. The MvC3 art suggests she’ll be in the game, and she should be a solid character as always. MvC2 had her using a giant energy blast as her Hyper Combo attack.

  Name: Frank West
From: Dead Rising
Appeared in previous installment?: No
Likelihood of appearing: Almost certain

The artwork seems to show that Frank West will be one of the characters, his stocky figure recognisable amongst the silhouettes. Frank has actually appeared in Tatsunoko vs Capcom, so this won’t be his first appearance in a fighting game. His attacks revolved around using mall objects, as well as summoning zombies much like Jill Valentine did in MvC2. A strange character to master.

  Name: Seth
From: Street Fighter IV
Appeared in previous installment?: No
Likelihood of appearing: Likely

Named after Seth Killian, creator of SFIV – Seth is perhaps one of the most hated bosses of all time, with his unfair AI and cheap attacks. Killian says Seth’s fine (sadistic power trip much?), and I’m sure we’ll get a few groans if he gets officially announced – one of the silhouettes definitely looks to me like the bald tyrant so we can only hope he’s toned down for this game.

  Name: Akuma
From: Street Fighter
Appeared in previous installment?: Yes
Likelihood of appearing: Possible

With the roster set to around 15 characters per side, I could imagine that Capcom would want to reduce the amount of “Shoto” type characters that utilise similar moves to that of Ryu. However, Akuma has a large following and has appeared in MvC2, so I wouldn’t be surprised if we see his “Dark Hado” version of Ryu’s fighting style appearing in the game.

  Name: Megaman
From: Megaman
Appeared in previous installment?: Yes
Likelihood of appearing: Quite Likely

Being brought almost to the status of mascot due to his popularity, the “Blue Bomber” is one of Capcom’s most well-known characters. Although there’s been no mention of him so far, I would be surprised if he doesn’t make an appearance in one of his many incarnations, having appeared in both Marvel vs Capcom and Tatsunoko vs Capcom previously. In MvC2 his Hyper move involved growing into a giant robot and blasting the enemy up with huge missiles.

  Name: Gouken
From: Street Fighter IV
Appeared in previous installment?: No
Likelihood of appearing: Possible

Gouken hasn’t been around as a playable character for long, but being the “good” brother of Akuma and Ryu’s master I imagine he has gotten quite a following fairly quickly. If Akuma gets in, I can see Gouken being put in due to his popularity as well.

  Name: Captain Commando
From: Captain Commando
Appeared in previous installment?: Yes
Likelihood of appearing: Possible

Originally created as a mascot for Capcom, his name even abbreviating to CAP.COM, he starred in the self-titled game Captain Commando which played in the same way as Final Fight. Although an old mascot, Capcom included him in MvC2 and may feel he is worthy of continuing in the newer title. His Hyper Combo involved summoning all three of his allies from Captain Commando to attack together.

  Name: Strider Hiryu
From: Strider
Appeared in previous installment?: Yes
Likelihood of appearing: Unsure – but I hope so!

Strider is another of Capcom’s older characters - a futuristic ninja/mercenary who utilises lightning-fast blade attacks, can climb walls, and has a number of robotic animals and devices that can assist him in battle. Although perhaps not well known nowadays, Strider was a very good character in MvC2, and I can only hope Capcom will see him worthy of keeping in the latest version.

  Name: Jill Valentine
From: Resident Evil
Appeared in previous installment?: Yes
Likelihood of appearing: Possible

Jill Valentine was the original female lead of Resident Evil, along with Chris Redfield. However, since Chris and Frank West have joined the roster, her mixture of gun and zombie attacks have perhaps been left redundant. Capcom may decide to keep her, perhaps even changing her to the “blonde-super-Jill’ from RE5, but we’ll just have to wait and see.

  Name: Samanosuke Akechi
From: Onimusha
Appeared in previous installment?: No
Likelihood of appearing: Doubtful but would be good

Since the release of MvC2, Onimusha is a series that has been and gone – the most recent title being Dawn of Dreams, the fourth installment which was released on the PS2 a few years ago. Samanosuke is a japanese samurai who has been the most prominent of the series’ protagonists, employing a mixture of elemental swords and the ability to transform into an all-powerful being, the “Onimusha”. Although it’s sadly unlikely he’ll be included, there is hope – Tatsunoko vs Capcom recently included Onimusha 4’s Soki as a playable character, meaning the series has not been forgotten altogether.

  Name: Vergil
From: Devil May Cry
Appeared in previous installment?: No
Likelihood of appearing: Unlikely due to roster size

The evil twin of Dante, there could be no better character to rival him in MvC3 - the similar appearance between the twins being one of their only similarities. While Dante is generally good, lighthearted and fun, Vergil is known for his cold demeanor and deadly precision with his katana, Yamato. He was a playable character in DMC3: Special Edition, offering a unique playing style that was just as good to play as Dante himself.

  Name: Phoenix Wright
From: Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Appeared in previous installment?: No
Likelihood of appearing: Unlikely

A lawyer? In a fighting game? Am I mad? Probably! But to be honest, MvC is all about madness, and including characters from all walks of life. Known for his tagline “OBJECTION!”, Phoenix is probably one of the only lawyers to be loved rather than despised. Originally, Phoenix Wright was even planned to be in Tatsunoko vs Capcom, but didn’t make the final cut. I sort of hope they get him in this! Every MvC game needs a novely character or two, after all!

So these are my predictions for the Capcom side of the roster! What do you think?

Expect to see my predictions for the Marvel side soon.

Super Street Fighter IV Tournament Mode

In keeping with the Capcom fighter theme we have had going since the first announcement of the new street fighter, I thought I would give you some more info on next weeks release of Super Street Fighter IV. And its tournament mode.

I could hear the sighs of relief going out across the gaming universe as avid Street Fighter fans read the title of this article, and yes, I am somewhat pleased too. The fact that Super Street Fighter IV is now implementing a proper tournament mode makes me very happy indeed. I used to spend hours a night on Soul Caliber IV on its tournament mode so Super Street Fighter IV implementing this mode is right up my street.

I might as well get the bad news out of the way while I am here. This mode will NOT be coming out on the games release next week which is a bit of a bummer, so yes it is going to be a DLC add-on. Lucky you will not have to folk out any cash for it. It’s a free download, yay. You just have to wait till June 15th for it to be released.

Now the bad news is out of the way, let’s get onto the good news and what this awesome mode has to offer we are looking at an online tournament mode that will let groups of street fighters band together in a tournament to the Death/Knock Out.This is pretty much just like the one in Soul Caliber IV, what happens is all the fighters will be placed on the tournament tree at the start of the torny, then the fights will begin. As fighters do battle the other players within the tournament will stand by and observe. All head sets will be active mind, so heckling of any kind is allowed, but if you do get a little bit too hacked off with one person then you can always mute them.

Like championship mode in the first game, character selection will be double-blind here, meaning you will not be able to see which character or opponent selects and visa versa so there will be no character cheating here. But sadly there isn’t a no ken selection option implemented into the mode. There is a replay mode however, kind of the same idea as Halo 3’s theater mode, you can watch back your fights in the tournaments replay theater. A nice little addition for those of you out there who like to rub a little salt into your opponents wounds.

Double Blind Character Selection

Another thing I have found out which I thought was damn interesting was a Belt system. even though Tournament mode is not Ranked, some specific tournaments out there are going to have belts. These belts will be saved to your character, the awesome thing here though is that you cannot keep your belts forever, if someone does beat you in torny mode, you will have to give up your title. Now I am not sure if you can make your own title belt, but if you can be assured that a Plus XP title belt will be built if the opportunity arises.

To me tournament mode is going to be one hell of a great addition. It’s just a shame we have to wait just a bit longer.

The dream becomes a reality…

In my eyes, Capcom create the best fighting games out there, and nothing compares. Tekken? Too button mashy. Virtua Fighter? Too realistic and difficult to pick up and play. Mortal Kombat? Too cheesy. Now, I’m not saying that I don’t think these series’ have their merits – it’s generally personal preference to which fighter suits you best – but games like Capcom vs SNK 2 and Street Fighter IV are examples of the few fighters that keep me genuinely hooked, not getting simply played for a week and never touched again. With decent rosters, cool moves and gameplay that is both exciting and technical, there’s just something about them that keeps me interested no matter how much I play.

Amongst these fighters, one of my personal favourites was Marvel vs Capcom 2 on the Playstation 2 - perhaps one of the best combinations I could ever see – Capcom’s heroes clashing against the colourful and fantastic comic book heroes of Marvel – allowing for spectacular battles such as Jill Valentine, Megaman and Ryu facing off against the likes of Wolverine, Venom and the Hulk. The game featured 56 characters – all beautifully animated and with individual move sets, and is one of my most-played fighters of all. Naturally I’d always wanted another installment – the ever-growing ranks of Capcom just praying to be included – such as Devil May Cry’s Dante, Okami’s Ameterasu. However, it could not be done – MvC2 soon saw limited print due to Capcom losing the Marvel license, and hopes of a sequel were all but lost.

However, this week brings big news - with a surprise announcement. Ten years on from release of Marvel vs Capcom 2, and months after it’s port to Playstation 3 and Xbox 360, Garv spoke the words I had been waiting for for such a long time.

Marvel vs Capcom 3 has been announced.”

That’s right – it’s official. So far we have six confirmed characters, according to trailers and artwork. On the Capcom side we have – big shock – Ryu. Alongside him are a Resident Evil 5-style Chris Redfield, and the seductive succubus Morrigan from Darkstalkers. The Marvel side features three classic superheroes – Wolverine, Iron Man, and the Hulk. Nothing new as such, but I’d be disappointed if they weren’t there. More interestingly, there are a number of silhouettes surrounding the fighters – and some of them are extremely suspicious. Kotaku have done the work here and I see no reason to think they have it at all wrong. So feast your eyes on the images below.

That’s right – it seems Dante finally should make his appearance in the series, along with Darkstalkers’ Felicia, Street Fighter’s Chun-Li, Dead Rising’s Frank West, alongside Marvel’s Dr Doom and Deadpool. The others I either don’t know personally or I’m not 100% convinced of so far – but make your own judgements. Is it just me, however, or could that be the much-hated Seth from Street Fighter IV standing next to the silhouette of Chun-Li with ??? above his head? I hope not - or if it is, I hope he’s going to be nerfed to hell so that we can enjoy hulk-smashing him to death.

If the artwork’s not enough, we even have a trailer! It’s very Street Fighter IV with its ink-style artwork, but it looks impressive. The game itself looks to be done in a similar style to that of Tatsunoko vs Capcom, with the 2D combat using a cel-shaded 3D graphics engine – however this time it’s going to be on the more powerful consoles, so we’ll hopefully be seeing something quite beautiful.

I’m sure as hell excited, Marvel vs Capcom 3: Fate of Two Worlds looks to be one of the biggest games to be announced this year. Hell, it’s even taken my mind off of Super Street Fighter IV. I look forward to hearing more, and hope to bring you the news whenever I get my hands on it.

But once again, let me savour the words I never thought I’d actually be able to say, and I say it with true excitement.

Marvel VS Capcom 3 is on its way.

APRIL FOOLS! Capcom Announce 11th And Final Fighter.

Yes, none of this is true. Happy April 1st! Keep on gaming ;)

Searching the internet in the early hours of the morning, as you do. I managed to come across some new information regarding Super Street Fighter IV. Now as you all know, here at Plus XP (well me and Leon mainly) are super excited about the next installment in the Street Fighter series.

So what is this new information? Well Capcom have managed to keep this very hush hush, but with some expert internet digging I have managed to find that they are in fact adding an 11th new character to the roster, and that character is none other than Alex.

Now in all honesty I only became a fan of the street fighter series when IV came out, so I don’t know much about the characters from previous games. But seasoned street fighters out there know that this guy made his first appearance in Street Fighter III.

For those of us who aren’t sure who this guy is, let me shed some light. Alex entered the World Warrior tournament in Street Fighter III, because a cult leader named Gill, who was the leader of the Illuminati at the time had injured his friend and father figure called Tom. With fury in his heart Alex wanted to Kill this cult leader, he defeated him in battle, but couldn’t bring himself to finish the deed, so he left Gill and went home to find Tom recovered.

So why is he coming to Street Fighter IV? Surly his mission has been complete? Well not much information has been announced thus far, but what I have heard is that Alex now has a grudge against the new american fighter Rufus, which kind of makes sence seeing as Alex is american himself.

So what will we expect his fighting style to be like? Well if the previous Street fighter III titles are anything to go by, Alex’s fighting style is well-rounded, he uses a mix of charge moves and rotational moves, but if you had to pin a style on him, he has more of a wrestling style to the likes of Zangeif and El Frute, using such special moves as a Power Bomb, kind of like Zangeif’s, and a spiral DDT. He also has specials such as Air Stampede which is a bit like M. Bisons head stomp and a Flash chop where he performs a short range horizontal hand chop.

It sounds like Alex will be a welcome addition to the Street Fighter IV roster. It’s probably a bit late for the likes of Gill or Tom to be added to the SSFIV crowd, but I still hold out hope. Man I cannot wait for this game

Super Street Fighter IV New Character Info Round Up

Over the last couple of months the Plus XP team have been giving you little snippets of Super Street Fighter IV info straight off the press. Now that all the new characters have been announced and confirmed. I thought it would be best to give you the low down on these new additions to the Super Street Fighter IV Roster.

For those of you asking, ‘What is Super Street Fighter IV (SSFIV) offering us that the original Street Fighter IV didn’t?here is al little insight.  Well they key fact to note down here is that this game will be packed with tons of extra content. We are looking at 10 new characters, a pile of new stages, bonus stages, new ultra combos, revamped multiplayer online, new challenge modes and the whole games has been returned and re-balanced. I’ll believe the last one when I see it mind, because I heard somewhere that Seth maybe even more of a cheap bastard than last time. But lets forget about that….for now.

One of the biggest things here is the new characters. Which I will now shed some light on, some of these guys will be old Street Fighter fan favorites making a return, others are brand spanking new characters.

T.Hawk

T.Hawk, aka Thunder Hawk is a pretty bad ass, buffed up indian tribes man. Back in Street Fighter II he came to the tournament seeking revenge against M.Bison. Who destroyed his home and killed his father. He then made an appearance in Street Fighter Alpha 3 where M.Bison kidnapped and brainwashed his sister Julia to do his bidding. He now returns to SSFIV, becuase Julia has gone missing again, and assumes Bison is up to his old tricks.

T.Hawk has been compared to the fighting style of Zangeif, lets hope he isn’t as cheap.

Dee Jay

Another fan favorite from Street Fighter II. Back in Street Fighter II He came into the world warrior tournament to seek out a new musical sound. As you can gather by his name, he is somewhat of a musical type, often compared to the likes of Eddie Gordo from the Tekken series.

To his friends and fans Dee Jay has been dubbed ‘the southern comet’ and has quite an unusual kick boxing style that some of you about there are bound to love.

No info has been found as to why he is making an appearance in SSFIV. Maybe it’s because he wants to re-sample some punch sound effects for his next single.

Adon

Sagat’s Pupil makes a return to the street fighter franchise. After his appearance in street fighter alpha 2 and 3. Adon briefly mad an appearance in Sagat’s prologue in the original street Fighter IV. He is now back in full form in SSFIV to prove his teacher wrong and try his best not to be knocked down by a single shinku hadoken from Ryu.

Adon’s fighting style is a lot like Sagat’s but implementing more acrobatic moves, meaning, when used well, this fighter will be a hard one to squash.

Cody

Cody Traves started out his fist fighting life in the game franchise Final Fight. He and another fighter named Guy started life there before being moved to the street fighter Roster in Street Fighter Alpha 3. Cody broke out of Bison in Alpha 3 after a prison riot, He then went travelling where he met up with his good friend Guy. Cutting a long story short the both of them went their separate ways after Alpha 3. Now the prison convict returns to SSFIV with his hands cuffed and his throwing knives in had.

Cody is a hardcore street brawler, powerful yet nimble at the same time, he is a well rounded character with a few nasty tricks up his cuffed sleeves.

Guy

Cody’s partner in crime is Street fighter Alpha 3 and another fighter from the final fight series. But after the Alpha 3, Guy and Cody went their seperate ways. Guy then committed a crime which Cody was later convicted and the two have not spoke since. Is guy’s return to SSFIV his only chance of getting to Cody? Will the two make up or kick off one hell of a fight? I am hoping the latter.

Guy has an interesting fighting style that is a mix on Ninjitsu and Modern Day street brawling. I cannot wait to play as him.

Dudley

Another boxer enters the ring. Dudley hails from the United Kingdom and is a gentle man boxer. His love for violence never overshadows his charm and manner. He made his first appearance in Street Fighter 3 2nd Impact where his fathers empire had fallen after his death and Dudley was left to pick up the pieces.

It is not known why he is making an appearance in SSFIV,  But i feel something nasty is going to happen when Dudley and Balrog cross paths.

Ibuki

Ibuki made her first appearance in Street Fighter III, she is a ninja warrior who has been trained from childhood. Her first appearance in street fighter III involved a Project G-File which was responsible for creating something called the Necro and Twelve. But whether this is relevant to SSFIV I am not too sure as the other characters in her story line do not feature in the latest game.

Ibuki uses Ninjitsu and is your classic Ninja warrior, fast agile and ready to kick butt.

Makoto

Makoto first Appeared in Street Fighter III 3rd Strike where her father’s death led to the collapse of the family Dojo where she had been brought up and trained. She then sought out Ryu, and a huge fight broke out, this in turn brought about a huge amount of publicity and d made her Dojo a huge success. She then took on the dojo, her students started to fizzle out after she introduced the new policy of ‘if you can beat me, your in’. She has no students left.

She is specially trained in Rindoukan karate and is a fast technical character, Her addition to Street Fighter IV is not known, but Ryu has to have something to do with it.

Hakan

A brand new character for SSFIV, Haken hales from Turkey. He is the president of the words most renowned edible oil factory. His desire to fight in the tournament is for a bit of fun and to make his wife and seven daughters proud.

Most if not all of Hakens fighting style revolves around how oily is body is, his moves are some of the most unusual in the street fighter Franchise. You have to love greased up comedy characters.

Juri

Last But not least, Juri! Juri is a new character for SSFIV. She has a pretty in-depth story which involves her father going after M.Bison’s company, Shadaloo. Her father was a lawyer and his sole purpose was to prosecute Shadaloo, but he and his family were all kidnapped by the organisation. Juri lost her parents and her left eye through the ordeal. Her left eye was replaced and given the power of the Feng Shui System. Not much else is known about her as yet.

Juri’s fighting style is offensive based using a lot of kicks. She is very powerful and is out for revenge, making this character a very hard one to defeat.

So there you have it, all ten of the new fighter confirmed for Super Street Fighter IV. Now I must save some pennies for the games release next month.

Tatsunoko VS Capcom: Ultimate-All Stars

A while back, Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All-Stars was a Wii game I was sure would never hit shores outside of Japan; but come Eurogamer we were told otherwise – somehow someone managed to convince the bigwigs that people outside of asia would actually like to see the new Capcom fighter, regardless if they didn’t recognise half of the cast. With a little help from Tatsunoko themselves, Capcom got past liscencing issues and granted us a chance to get our hands on their latest fighter. Personally, I’d only heard of Casshan and Karas, but I was eager to play a new style of Capcom Vs title, with some new fighters to play with bundled in.

As with Street Fighter IV, Tatsunoko vs Capcom has taken a step away from the traditional 2D style fighter, this time opting for a sort of 2.5D style with a cell-shaded 3D design working with a 2D engine. Although I’m always sceptical with Capcom’s fighter’s going 3D, they’ve once again managed to rehaul the graphic design whilst keeping the game feeling like it should.

People who are mostly unfamiliar with Tatsunoko (probably more than 90% of gamers) should feel right at home with this game – as with all VS titles half the cast consists of Street Fighter characters and various other members of the Capcom roster – Ryu, Chun Li, Alex and Darkstalkers’ Morrigan hold the flag of the Capcom fighters, joined with some more unsual entries such as Soki (Onimusha 4), Viewtiful Joe, Megaman Volnutt (Megaman 64) and Frank West (Dead Rising). Sadly the Capcom VS series is still unaquainted with Devil May Cry’s Dante, but we can’t have everything we want, can we? The classic fighters all retain the majority of their signature moves, and all of the new cast have been converted well to the fighter format.

The Tatsunoko side, however unfamiliar, offer a good selection of characters to the cast – although I was a little biased toward the Capcom cast to begin with, I soon found myself getting aquainted with Casshan (with a lot of rocket-boot style moves and supported by his cyber-dog Friender), Jun the Swan (who uses a lot of stylish teleportation and explosive moves), Karas (with plenty of katana-spinning slicing moves), and Tekkaman (aided by a Scopion-esque grapple and quick lance attacks). Although one or two of the Tatsunoko characters look a bit samey to a reviewer unfamiliar to their backgrounds, there are some genuinely good characters amongst their ranks and I frequently find myself using them.

The game operates on a 2-on-2 basis, with the ability to switch characters on the fly, and chain moves together. Unlike most Capcom fighter titles, there are no seperate Punch and Kick buttons, simply Light, Medium and Heavy. This does make the game feel a little simpler to start with, but in all truth it doesn’t take much away from the experience – there are plenty of moves and it doesn’t even occur that anything’s not there, and it’s possible to chain combos by linking them in order from Light up to Heavy (such as LL,MM,HH or L,M,HHH). Special moves generally consist of traditional Street Fighter inputs, such as Down, Down-right, Forward, Attack for Ryu’s signature Hadoken, or charge attacks such as Chun-Li’s spinning bird kick.

As with most VS games (most specifically Marvel Vs Capcom), TvC is a lot more hectic than Street Fighter IV, with plenty of leaping around, huge beams and aerial supers. The inputs for supers are fairly simple generally, often with more of an emphasis on how you use the moves, rather than actually being able to pull them off. Many of them are performed in the same way as specials, simply by pressing all three attack buttons at once (such as Ryu’s Shinku Hadoken which is pulled off by pressing Down, Down-right, Forward, L+M+K). This may seem a little easy to veterans, but it actually evens the playing field quite well, giving most players full access to the majority of characters’ moves and allows them to really focus on the fight itself. The game operates with a 5-bar Super guage, with each character having 2 Supers that require a single bar each, and an Ultra that requires three. This results in a massive 70+ super attacks, which can make some battles quite spectacular.

Aside from that, the game does offer some extra, more in-depth abilities such as Baroque mode (in which a player sacrifices health regeneration for a burst in attack speed), and chaining moves via tagging. The game really fits the ideal of “easy to play, difficult to master”, but I personally haven’t really gotten good enough to really use this to it’s full potential as of yet.

The game’s arcade mode features 8 rounds – mainly of random 2-on-2 matchups. However, the game also offers special fights at rounds 4 and 8 in the form of bosses. This brings me to my next point – giant characters. Tatsunoko and Capcom each have one “giant” character in their roster, which serve as the Round 4 ’sub-bosses’, and each count as two characters in one – so solo battles only with these guys. Capcom’s ‘giant’ is PTX-40A, a mech from Lost Planet, and Tatsunoko has Gold Lightan, a sort of giant golden transformer/lighter hybrid. A similar “giant” unplayable 3-round boss in the form of Yami (from Okami) takes the position of Final Boss in Arcade mode. Now, I quite enjoy the concept of these characters, and they look great; however I can’t really decide if they feel as though they balance very well with the game. Most of the time when fighting them they either feel like punching bags which are easy to pummel with screen-filling supers and energy blasts, and other times they can be frustrating with their own screen-wide swipes and barrages of attacks. Yami in particular is a bit of a pain – if you lose one of the three rounds against him (in which your health only recovers a little between rounds), you must start again from the first stage of the boss. Not too bad at times, frustrating at others. As for the playable giants – they feel a little novel to play a couple of times, before I end up returning to the regular characters who feel a bit more balanced.

Aside from Arcade and Vs modes, the game offers a shop that allows you to unlock art and alternate colours for each character, gallery modes for viewing art, character models and sounds. Six of the characters in the roster need to be unlocked, so there’s also some incentive to playing it a lot if the fun alone isn’t enough for you.

Also included on the disc is an unlockable game which involves using one of four characters in a sort of arcade top-down mini game. Sadly, it seems the Japanese version of the game included a whole selection of other mini games that weren’t ported to the international versions - no idea why they removed them, which is a little bit of a shame. However, although the one we have is a little bit of cheesy fun, I personally found myself returning to the main game soon after having a go; so I doubt we’ve missed out on too much.

The game also offers online support, which is a nice feature for competing with friends (provided you actually know someone who owns it) and random players if that’s your thing.

I really do like the game, however there is one big flaw with it that does put me off a little – the controls. The game can be played with several different controllers – from Wii remote, Wii remote + Nunchuk, GameCube Controller, Classic Controller or Arcade stick. However, I only have access to the Wii and Cube controllers – neither of which feel particularly comfortable, the Wii remote with it’s un-intuitive button layout (which can’t be changed), and the Cube controller’s analogue stick paling in comparison to the comfortableness of the PS3 and Xbox counterparts used for Street Fighter IV. The game works well with an Arcade Stick – having used one at Eurogamer before it’s release – but it’s a big expense for a controller you’ll only be using for one title on the console at the moment.

Overall, I really think Tatsunoko vs Capcom: Ultimate All Stars is a game worth buying. As with Marvel vs Capcom it’s a more flashy and hectic style of Capcom Fighter, sort of a lighthearted crazy little brother to the challenging and technical Street Fighter IV, complementing it as an alternative rather than a rival. The game has a few minor flaws, and sadly it’s best with an Arcade Stick (never thought I’d hear me say that about a fighting game); but the beauty of it, good roster and vast assortment of Super attacks make it a great addition to the VS series. Sadly it won’t be released on consoles other than the Wii – so PS3 and 360 owners may miss out on this – but it’s said that a potential seques could be going multi-platform in future depending on sales and reception to this.

Just When You Thought Left 4 Dead 2 Wasn’t Enough…

Imagine you are stuck in a city which is very reminiscent of Las Vegas, Navada. A Zombie infection has broken out, and you are alone surviving the zombie infested casinos. But your not just trapped with Zombies here you are also trapped with a nice collection of deranged psychopaths to boot.

I am of corse talking about Dead Rising 2. The next big Zombie title to hit Quarter 1 2010. You play a guy called Chuck Greene, he is a former motocross champion and has decided to take some time out in a fictional representation of Las Vegas, called Fortune City. Untill the Zombie plague reaches the city and it’s up to him to survive the undead.

So as you can see straight off the baton here you are not secluded to one building. The first Dead Rising saw players battling zombie hordes in a massive Mall. Dead Rising 2 seems to be spread across a whole city, with plenty of weapons at your disposal.

Right, so if it’s spread across a whole city, then why doesn’t Chuck decide to high tale it out of there? Well this sequel is set to have a deeper story line than just mowing down zombies. Chuck’s daughter has gone missing and one of his key objectives in this game is to find her before it’s too late. So it’s got some more depth than just a guy with a camera, killing zombies and looking at his watch. Which is pretty good really, seeing as I like to have some sort of objective when it comes to killing Zombies.

Mind you though, game play wise you will still have the classic time management system you did in the original. So you will still be looking at your watch (but please for the love of god lets hope Capcom have taken Standard definition just a little bit into consideration). There will also be a variety of new weapons and objects at your disposal to fight off the undead hordes. Such as Wheel Chair, A Craps stick (you know the dice game in casinos, and the stick the guy uses to collect the dice back up, yeah that thing) and a shotgun with a pitch folk strapped to it. Believe me though, you are gonna need all these new weapons, wanna know why? Well in the original Dead Rising you had about a maximum of 800 zombies on the screen at one time, so back then it was a sizeable zombie mosh pit. In Dead Rising 2 you can have a maximum of 6,000 on-screen at one time. That is the equivalent of a Circle Pit at a Devil Driver Concert and believe me, thats blinking massive.

Now we all love zombie slaying as much as the next gamer, but we also love Zombie slaying with a friend, and Dead Rising 2 offers this. May I introduce the multiplayer element of this game, this game mode sounds pretty damn interesting and is kind of reminiscent of the old Smash TV game back on the Sega mega drive. The idea is that players will be put into a Reality TV show called ‘Terror Is Reality’ then each player is pitted against each other for some zomb ie slaying action, they are placed in a room and have to kill as most zombies as possible to rack up points. Players can use any weapons that are given to them from your bog standard melee weapons, to chainsaw equipped motor cycles. You will also have the option to prevent other gamers from scoring using ‘dirty tactics’, though it hasn’t been confirmed what those tactics are yet.

Dead Rising 2 sounds like a vast improvement from the original. It takes the best bits from the first game and adds to them, while also shoving a lot of new content in. I will be keeping a keen eye on this game, as I really didn’t get on well with the first one, but I really wanted too…. Maybe it was because of my Standard Definition TV, but who knows.
