The Next Level In Gaming

Contributed by Helen Doherty Sooo Garvaos kindly agreed to let me take a detour from my usual custom of reviewing iPhone apps so that I could bring you this review of what is to perhaps be the last big Nintendo DS release: Pokémon Black/White. For those of you who’ve been living under a rock for the past 10 years: Pokémon is a long-running RPG series, which has inspired everything from movies to ice-pops (and a whole host of other crazy [...]

As a Gamer, I can…sometimes find myself a bit too engrossed in my work. We’ve all been there; a quick play turns into a couple of hours and then more and more and more. You don’t want to leave the gaming zone you’ve created for yourself. There’s always an excuse: “Just to the next save point” “I just have to finish this quest” “Just a few more levels, then I can face the boss”. And if you’re particularly unlucky, the [...]

The Zill’Oll series has previously only ever appeared on Japanese consoles; with PlayStation, PlayStation 2 and PSP instalments in the past. However, for the first time an instalment is coming to the west and we can finally get our hands on a game in the series on the Playstation 3. If it wasn’t for the Elder Scrolls series I would never have a love for Fallout 3 and New Vegas. Even though I didn’t really get into Morrowind or Oblivion when I played the games, I still think I wouldn’t enjoy Fallout as mush as I did if I hadn’t played those games first. It has been 5 years since we have seen the next installment in the Elder Scrolls series and finally details are surfacing for the next installment. [...]

It’s been over 10 years since I played the original Fallout on my old Windows 95 computer. It kept me up for hours with its interesting story, identifiable characters and cheeky combat system. I was happy to see the series revitalised in 2008, but while Fallout 3 was fun, I found it lacking in substance. The sudden ending and lack of coverage for the side quests left me feeling frustrated.  I was excited about New Vegas, Obsidian Entertainment along with [...]

Contributed by Helen Doherty Voice Fantasy is an innovative new iPhone (3G and newer) title from Square-Enix and Koto, where you generate Final Fantasy-style battlers using the power of your voice! Its not a game per se, as you don’t actually control your character during gameplay ; you merely watch as your creation battles it out, hilariously trilling whatever it was you said during their birth as their battlecry. But its feel and abundance of Final Fantasy influence makes it [...]

RPG games for me are a mixed bag, there are very few I can really get into and enjoy to the full. The Fable series defiantly being one of them, Borderlands and Fallout 3, again some great RPG titles. But some of what I would say the more traditional ones I really can’t get into for some reason.Games such as most of the Final Fantasy titles for some reason I can’t really fully immerse myself into. So when I went [...]

I was in the developer session for the Witcher 2. Now, I never completed the first one because it went on for so bloody long, but I felt confident in my guess that Geralt didn’t either die or go to a nice retirement home with a honey of his choosing. The demo started with our white-haired hero strung up half-naked in a dungeon for a crime he didn’t commit. The dialogue hadn’t improved greatly on that of the first as [...]

I got the play a 30 minute demo that encapsulated the warrior and rogue starting to DA2. The first thing that was made apparent was that this was neither a sequel nor prequel, it was taking place pretty much alongside the main plot of the original Dragon Age. I was a little edgy at playing on the 360, since I’d got pretty used to playing DA on the PC. But the demo put my fear to rest quick sharpish as [...]

New Vegas has had its share of image problems. Mainly that it looks like a simple mod of Fallout 3, as many loud and annoying fans were happy to declare ad infinitum behind me while I was trying to enjoy that damn thing. Yes, New Vegas looks and plays very much like Fallout 3 because Obsidian is using a modded version of the engine of F3. But! Because they had the engine pretty much all set up and easy for [...]
